During the procedure, warm water is gently flushed into the ear canal to remove earwax plugs. However, it’s crucial that the earwax is softened before irrigation. If the wax is hard, irrigation can pose a risk of perforating the eardrum. To ensure the procedure is safe, use ear drops (like olive oil) 2-3 times a day for 2 weeks before scheduling your ear irrigation appointment.
If you've not used ear drops as directed, the procedure may not be successful, and another procedure may be more beneficial.
What to Expect:
Ear irrigation is generally painless. Lukewarm water is gently squirted into the ear canal to dislodge the softened earwax, which is then flushed out. If you feel any discomfort during the procedure, it will be stopped immediately. Afterward, your ear will be examined to ensure everything is clear before we leave.
Some people may experience dizziness following the procedure, but this typically resolves quickly. The ear canal can be more susceptible to infection for 4 to 5 days following irrigation, until new earwax forms to protect the canal. In some cases, you might experience itching or mild inflammation in the ear canal, which can be treated with ear drops.
Possible Risks:
Although rare, ear irrigation can cause damage to the ear or eardrum. Please seek medical attention if you experience any of the following after the procedure:
Ear pain
Persistent itching in the ear
Ear discharge
Swelling around the ear canal, which could indicate an infection
Who Should Not Have Ear Irrigation:
Ear irrigation may not be suitable for everyone. Please avoid booking an appointment if any of the following apply to you:
You've had complications from ear irrigation in the past
You have grommets (small tubes in the eardrum)
You've had ear surgery (other than grommets that have come out at least 18 months ago, and you've been discharged from the hospital)
You have a cleft palate (even if repaired)
You have an ear infection or have had one in the last six weeks
You have recurring ear infections (otitis externa)
You have, or have had, a perforated ear drum
If ear irrigation isn’t effective or is not recommended for your situation, we can look to see if there is another suitable ear wax removal option or you may be advised to visit your GP.
